Sergio Perez, the Mexican Formula 1 driver, has expressed his belief that his former boss, Otmar Szafnauer, was not given enough time to showcase his abilities and make Alpine a success in the sport. Szafnauer recently parted ways with Alpine after a disagreement with the team's management over the timeline required for achieving success in Formula 1.

Szafnauer, who had decades of experience in the sport, stated that he believed it would take until 2026 for Alpine to reach its target. However, the senior management at the company disagreed, asserting that success could be achieved much sooner. With such a fundamental difference in their long-term vision for the team, it was decided that they should part ways immediately.

The departure of Szafnauer, who had joined the team just over a year ago, came as a shock to many within the paddock. Adding to the surprise, Alpine also announced the departure of the highly-regarded sporting director, Alan Permane.

Perez, who had previously worked with Szafnauer at the Racing Point squad, expressed his surprise at the sudden departure and emphasized the importance of giving individuals in leadership positions sufficient time to demonstrate their potential. He praised Szafnauer's abilities, citing his achievements with limited budgets in other teams.

"I think Otmar is great, [and] any person in that position, you've got to give them time. I think Otmar lacked time to really show his potential, which I know is huge because I've seen what he's done in other teams with very limited budgets and with not-so-limited budgets as well," Perez said.

Perez believes that it is a shame that Szafnauer was not given more time to prove himself at Alpine. He emphasized that success in Formula 1 takes a significant amount of time and that whoever takes over the role needs to be given adequate time to implement their plans.

However, not everyone has been sympathetic towards Szafnauer. Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula 1 World Champion, suggested that Szafnauer should not be proud of his tenure at Alpine. Alonso himself left the team to join Aston Martin after contract negotiations were delayed.

Speaking to the BBC about the mishandling of the contract talks, Alonso said, "It was just on a very slow pace, and it was not from my side. I was just ready and happy. The 2022 car was a fast car, so I was also happy with the performance and the possibilities into the future."

Alonso criticized the slow pace of the conversations and the failure to put the agreed terms on paper. He also mentioned the comments made about his age, suggesting that they were unnecessary. Alonso believes that Szafnauer should refrain from speaking about his achievements, given the results that Aston Martin has achieved.

"It is the way they do things. Or the way Otmar does things. Because after this year, he should be quiet. He should not talk at all. After the results of Aston Martin and the results he's achieving, he's still talking and still proud of the decision, which is incredible, amazing," Alonso added.

The contrasting opinions from Perez and Alonso highlight the complexity of managing a Formula 1 team and the challenges faced by team principals. Building a successful team in Formula 1 requires time, resources, and a clear vision. However, the pressure to deliver results quickly can often lead to disagreements and departures.

Alpine will now have to find a replacement for Szafnauer and Permane, ensuring that the new leadership is given the necessary time and support to implement their strategies. The team will need to strike a balance between short-term performance and long-term success, as they navigate the highly competitive world of Formula 1.
