After Mercedes' strong showing in the morning session, they were nowhere to be seen in the second session. Red Bull's Max Verstappen came out on top at the end of Friday's practice in Miami. Mercedes surprised their fans by setting the two fastest times in the first session. However, the second session quickly showed the inconsistency of their performance. Drivers who went out on hard and medium tires in the second session had no trouble significantly improving their results from the first session.
However, the track's characteristics remained unchanged compared to the morning session, and the new asphalt still provided poor grip. Drivers continued to struggle to keep their cars on track, with Haas driver Kevin Magnussen coming close to crashing during the first part of the session. His car narrowly missed hitting the wall, only brushing against it. Magnussen and his team were lucky, unlike Nico Hulkenberg, whose car was seriously damaged during the morning session.
With 10 minutes left in the session, Charles Leclerc lost control of his SF-23 in Turn 7. The sudden understeer of the car caused it to go straight into the wall, almost certainly damaging the front wing and possibly the suspension of his Ferrari. The red flag came out once again, and when the track reopened, only four minutes remained in the session.
In the end, Max Verstappen was the fastest driver after 60 minutes of practice in Miami, outpacing both Ferrari drivers and Sergio Perez. Fernando Alonso, Lando Norris, and Lewis Hamilton followed behind. Stroll, Ocon, and Albon also made it to the top ten, with Albon's Williams continuing to show strong form.
George Russell, who had problems with the steering system in the morning session, finished 15th in the afternoon after the team was forced to replace his steering column. Piastri, Hulkenberg, Tsunoda, De Vries, and local hero Logan Sargeant finished behind him.
