Since McLaren's last taste of world championship success back in 2008, they have reverted to their traditional papaya livery. However, the team has decided to collaborate with Google on this unique design that combines elements from both past and present, resulting in an exciting fusion of styles. The unveiling took place at McLaren Technology Centre on Monday ahead of the highly anticipated race at Silverstone.
Not only will both MCL60 race cars feature this eye-catching special livery but Lando Norris is set to wear a customized helmet design and bespoke race boots. Both Norris and his teammate Oscar Piastri will also don one-off design race suits as part of this commemorative tribute.
McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown expressed his enthusiasm about reintroducing elements from the beloved classic chrome livery: "It’s no secret that racing fans love McLaren’s classic chrome livery...and we’re excited to be able to give our fans what they want." Clearly delighted with how the collaboration turned out between Google Chrome and team McLaren was Nick Drake who stated: "We were delighted with the fans’ reaction...now Google Chrome is putting chrome back on the McLaren for its home race."
This distinctive appearance follows another striking creation by McLaren earlier this year –the 'Triple Crown' papaya, white and black liveries seen during races in Monaco and Spain. This peculiar combination paid tribute to an extraordinary achievement—winning the Triple Crown, which encompasses Formula 1's Monaco Grand Prix, IndyCar's Indianapolis 500, and the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race.
It is clear that McLaren is committed to honoring its rich history and captivating fans through unique design choices. By bringing back iconic liveries such as the chrome-inspired one for this year's British Grand Prix, McLaren continues to captivate enthusiasts of both motorsport and design.
The British Grand Prix holds a special place in the hearts of McLaren fans as it serves as a homecoming event for this legendary team. Silverstone Circuit has been graced by historic moments delivered by McLaren drivers throughout their illustrious history in Formula 1. With multiple victories at this venue over the years, including last year’s triumph with Lando Norris securing his first podium finish, expectations are high for an exhilarating weekend of racing action.
As anticipation builds ahead of what promises to be an electric race weekend at Silverstone, fans can revel in seeing their favorite team pay homage to its iconic past while embracing future possibilities—combining elements from both eras into a visually stunning package. The decision to collaborate with Google Chrome showcases McLaren's dedication not only towards their on-track performance but also towards engaging supporters through innovative partnerships that ignite nostalgia and excitement.
