Lawson's recent performances have given Red Bull "plenty to think about" before announcing Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo as AlphaTauri’s drivers for 2024.
Lawson's Standout Performances
Lawson, 21, has competed in the last four races as a replacement for Ricciardo, who suffered a hand injury during a practice crash at the Dutch Grand Prix. His drive to the points in Singapore particularly caught the attention of many in the paddock. Despite these commendable efforts, AlphaTauri confirmed ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix that Tsunoda and Ricciardo would retain their positions next season, with Lawson continuing in a test and reserve role.
AlphaTauri's Line-up Strategy
In an interview with Sky Sports, Horner shed light on AlphaTauri’s line-up strategy and Lawson's place in the team. He praised Ricciardo's experience and motivation, stating that he would bring great leadership to the team and serve as a valuable benchmark for Tsunoda.
Horner also expressed confidence in Lawson's potential, stating, "I think Liam, it’s only a matter of time before he gets his opportunity and full-time chance. I think to have the three of them there is very strong for the group.”
Lawson's Future Prospects
Horner acknowledged Lawson's impact, especially following his Singapore drive, stating, "I think Liam certainly turned heads and gave us plenty to think about. He’s doing everything possible to justify a case for a full-time drive but unfortunately three into two doesn’t go.”
When asked about the possibility of Lawson being loaned to a team outside the two Red Bull-backed operations, Horner suggested that it was unlikely, given the limited availability of F1 seats for 2024. He emphasized that Lawson would focus on his test and reserve role, gaining as much experience as possible in the simulator.
Red Bull's Future Plans
Horner also hinted at Red Bull's future plans, stating, "At Red Bull Racing we want the best two drivers who are available. We’ve got a long-term contract with Max [Verstappen], Checo [Sergio Perez] is out of contract at the end of 2024, so you want to explore and see all of those options."
In conclusion, Horner expressed his satisfaction with Lawson's performance, stating, "We’ve seen what he’s capable of. He’s done the right thing, he’s grabbed that opportunity. I said to him, ‘You’ve done everything and more that you could have’." This statement, coupled with Horner's praise, suggests that Lawson's permanent F1 opportunity might be closer than we think.
