Charles Leclerc burst onto the Formula 1 scene in 2018, as a rookie with Sauber who quickly impressed with his speed and natural talent. The Monegasque then secured a promotion to Ferrari in 2019, where he continued to shine and won two races in his debut season with the Scuderia.
However, Leclerc's journey towards becoming one of the top drivers in the sport has been far from smooth sailing. Last season, he struggled with inconsistency and mistakes that ultimately cost him a shot at the World Championship title. Meanwhile, his teammate Carlos Sainz proved to be a formidable opponent and often outperformed Leclerc.
Despite these setbacks, Ferrari's Vice Chairman, Piero Ferrari, believes that Leclerc still has room for growth and can become a complete driver. However, Ferrari also acknowledges that there is one key ingredient missing from Leclerc's repertoire that Max Verstappen possesses – experience.
Verstappen, who has been racing in Formula 1 since he was 17 years old, has already established himself as one of the top drivers on the grid. He already is a two-time champion and is currently leading the standings after a dominant performance at the Miami Grand Prix.
When comparing Leclerc to Verstappen, Ferrari believes that the Monegasque has the speed to match his rival but lacks experience in terms of the number of Grand Prix races under his belt.
Leclerc's struggles last season were often attributed to his high-profile mistakes, including crashes during qualifying and races. However, the 25-year-old has shown that he can learn from his errors and bounce back stronger.
The Monaco driver's start to the season has not been a success. In the first 3 races, Leclerc failed to finish twice. At the weekend in Azerbaijan, Leclerc regained the points he had lost at the start of the season, showing that he had the pace for Pole Position. By the following weekend in Miami, however, Charles was a shadow of his former self.
As Leclerc continues to refine his skills and gain more experience, he will undoubtedly be looking to match Verstappen's pace and challenge for the World Championship title. The Monegasque has already proven that he has the speed and talent to compete at the highest level, but he will need to eliminate mistakes and show more consistency if he wants to truly compete with the likes of Verstappen and reigning champion Lewis Hamilton.
With seventeen races remaining in the season, Leclerc will have plenty of opportunities to showcase his potential and prove that he can match Verstappen's pace. If he can continue to learn from his mistakes and make progress towards becoming a complete driver, there is no doubt that Leclerc will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in Formula 1.
The Monaco Grand Prix, Leclerc's home race, is just a week away. It will be an excellent opportunity to make his redemption and finally win Charles' coveted race.
