Formula 1 is currently witnessing an unprecedented level of dominance from Red Bull Racing in the 2023 season. With Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez clinching victories in all races so far, their lead seems insurmountable, leaving fans concerned about a lack of competition at the front and a potential decline in interest.
However, Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of Formula 1, firmly believes that it would be unfair and inappropriate for F1 or the governing body (FIA) to intervene with mid-season rule changes aimed at curbing Red Bull's dominance. In an interview with the F1 Beyond the Grid podcast, Domenicali expressed his stance on maintaining integrity within the sport.
Domenicali stated unequivocally: "It's not correct because we cannot be seen as part of manipulation. This is not correct, and this is not fair." He reiterated his belief that retaining current regulations provides a better opportunity for other teams to close the gap on Red Bull naturally.
The sporting chief also highlighted that recent rule changes were implemented only a few years ago and should be given time to play out fully before considering any alterations. "I think that's [maintaining current rules] the right approach now," he said. "Also because rules have been changed not many years ago."
Acknowledging F1’s history of dominant cycles among teams throughout different eras, Domenicali emphasized shortening these periods through strategic measures rather than resorting to artificial interference: “So I would say our objectives should be - if you take this strategic approach -to make sure that these cycles in the future will be shorter.”
Domenicali refuted claims of a lack of competition within the grid, pointing out that while Red Bull's lead is significant, it is essential to recognize the impressive performance by other teams. "The gap is between one team and the others," he acknowledged. "We need to consider that they [Red Bull] did an incredible job."
He further added: “It is true that the gap seems to be big, but we need to be prudent because we know in life things can change very quickly. The others are very, very close. If you look at the gaps to other teams, I think they did an incredible job [and it] needs to be rewarded."
Domenicali emphasized his belief in fair competition and expressed confidence in rival teams' ability to catch up with Red Bull through their development work under F1’s budget cap regulations.
"I'm sure that other teams are watching how they can catch up with their development in the context of budget cap," Domenicali remarked. "It will be interesting to see if the development curve of the team that today is leading will slow down because, at end of day, they did a better job in shorter term."
As fans anticipate whether Red Bull's dominance can sustain for an entire season or if challengers will rise against them, Domenicali's commitment towards maintaining integrity and fairness ensures exciting prospects for Formula 1 moving forward.
