Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake has announced the appointment of James Key as Technical Director, signaling a commitment to a successful future for the team. Key brings over 25 years’ worth of experience in Formula One to the position and will take over from Jan Monchaux on September 1st, 2023.

This move is part of a wider strategy set in place by Sauber Group CEO, Andreas Seidl, earlier this year, to create and implement a clear roadmap for the team's progression. With Sauber Motorsport becoming a works team in 2026, Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake is determined to shape its operations and personnel accordingly.

James Key is no stranger to Hinwil, having served as Technical Director for the then-Sauber F1 Team between 2010 and 2012. This period saw the rebirth of the team, culminating in the production of a car designed by Key himself which went on to score four podium finishes.

Key's career began at Jordan Grand Prix where he held various engineering roles before becoming Formula One’s youngest-ever Technical Director at Midland F1 in 2005, aged just 33. He continued in this role when Midland F1 became Spyker F1 and eventually Force India. After leaving Sauber, Key served as Technical Director for Scuderia Toro Rosso before joining McLaren Racing ahead of the 2019 season.

Andreas Seidl expressed his delight at welcoming Key back to Hinwil, stating his belief that Key's appointment was a crucial step in the team's journey towards continued growth and success. He thanked Jan Monchaux for his contribution to the team's achievements, which saw them climb to sixth place in the Constructors' Championship in their most recent season.

James Key expressed his excitement at returning to Hinwil, describing his eagerness to work alongside both old and new colleagues as they head towards an exciting future. He acknowledged the significant amount of work ahead of the team, but expressed confidence in their commitment and determination to reach the top.

This appointment marks a significant move for Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake as they continue to shape their future and prepare for their transition into a works team. With James Key's wealth of experience and the commitment of those working within Hinwil, the team is well positioned for continued growth and success.
